From All That Dwell Below the Skies (Duke Street)

Here is a setting of the well-known hymn tune Duke Street. In my church it is sung to a text by Isaac Watts called “From All That Dwell Below the Skies”. Many other churches use a different poem by Watts called “Jesus Shall Reign” for the same melody. Regardless of the text, the hymn is majestic and inspiring.

I’ve tried to keep the majestic nature of the hymn tune in mind for this setting, which was written for a postlude for a recent stake conference. Due to the size of the congregation, I felt that a louder postlude was appropriate. I’m not sure I would play this for my ward sacrament meeting.

I hope you enjoy this setting of a great hymn.

  1. I see the PDF notation now, and I have printed the postlude. The first hymn of the liturgy being used next Sunday is set to Duke Street, and I like to use the hymn tunes from the service for my voluntaries, if it works out. I play the organ for a Moravian church, and sometimes it is difficult to find voluntaries based on the Moravian hymn tunes, so that is how I began my composing. So I very much appreciate what you are doing here. Many thanks, and may God bless you and your work.
