My wife and I recently went on a wonderful tour to Israel. It was amazing to actually see the places we had only read and heard about in song, scripture and story.
A few weeks before the tour the tour director asked me to play a musical number as part of our visit to the Galilee Branch meetinghouse (for my non-LDS readers, a branch is a small church congregation). I accepted and this arrangement of Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee was born. I experimented with the setting a bit before we left for Israel, but this arrangement was written entirely in the city of Tiberias, on the shores of the Sea of Galilee.
Since the Galilee Branch meetinghouse only has a piano, it was necessary to originally write this arrangement for the piano rather than the organ. However, the name of this blog is The Organ Is Praise, so I’ve also redone the setting for the organ. Here you can hear both settings, dedicated to the guides that so ably led our tour.
By the way, we really appreciated the tour company that put together our journey. We’ve used them several times and they have greatly enlarged our understanding of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. If you would like more information about them, please go to www.mormonheritage.com.
