This setting of Keep The Commandments is also one of my earliest endeavors. I love this song for its message: there is safety in keeping the commandments.
There really aren’t many commandments. The few we do have are given to help us avoid things that can really go wrong in our lives. They also teach us about the things that make our Father In Heaven what he is. Keeping the commandments helps us learn.
Keeping the commandments also provides peace. I have too many friends whose failure to keep the Word of Wisdom, for example, has caused tremendous pain not just in their lives but also in the lives of the people who love and care for them. The same could be said for those who violate other commandments, like honesty, chastity, fidelity or enduring to the end. I have seen the devastation caused in people’s lives when the commandments are broken, but I’ve also seen the peace and joy that comes when people humble themselves before God, acknowledge that he knows more than they do and return again to him.
All of us are sinners and all of us can do better. We need to be patient with those who struggle and remember that we too have our struggles. Our duty is not to judge, but to love and support each other.
